Overview of the different heat pumps
Water-to-Water Heat Pumps
Water-to-water heat pumps use water as a direct heat source. The thermal energy is extracted from a water circuit, such as a river, lake, or groundwater. The water-to-water heat pumps raise the temperature of the heat taken from the source and transfer this heat to another water circuit, providing the desired heat sink.
Waste Heat Pumps
In many cases, heat pumps can also utilize waste heat sources generated by industrial processes or other applications (e.g., in data centers). They capture this heat, raise the temperature level, and make the heat available for various heat sinks. This enables the recovery of heat that would otherwise be lost.
Air-to-Water Heat Pumps
Air-to-water heat pumps use ambient air as a heat source. The extracted thermal energy can then be used for heating or hot water production, among other applications. These systems are ideal when no other alternative heat source is available.
Geothermal Heat Pumps (Ground Source Heat Pumps)
Geothermal heat pumps, also known as brine-water or ground source heat pumps, use geothermal energy as the heat source. The heat is extracted either from ground collectors (horizontal or vertical pipes buried in the ground) or from boreholes (vertical wells drilled into the ground). Additionally, thermal water from deep geothermal sources can also be utilized as a heat source.
