As an official partner of Optimarin, Zeppelin Power Systems offers shipyards and ship owners advanced ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) from Optimarin, which are crucial for protecting marine life.
Ballast water plays an important role in the safe and efficient operation of ships. It contributes to stability, maneuverability, and optimal load distribution. However, it can also pose a threat to the marine environment by transporting invasive species. Our Optimarin ballast water treatment systems remove and neutralize invasive marine organisms, protecting the biodiversity of the oceans. With Optimarin's reliable products, we provide effective ballast water treatment solutions that meet the stringent standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Comprehensive maintenance, on-site services, and spare parts supply complete our offering and support the ongoing operation of vessels.
The Ballast Water Convention of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other national regulations require the treatment of ballast water to prevent the spread of invasive species. Optimarin systems meet and often exceed these strict standards.
By treating ballast water, Optimarin systems help protect the biodiversity of the oceans, which is crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Our systems are environmentally friendly and do not use chemicals or biocides in the treatment and cleaning processes.
Zeppelin Power Systems offers advanced and reliable ballast water treatment systems that are easy to install and maintain. Their technology is based on proven methods such as UV treatment, which is both effective and environmentally friendly.
We provide comprehensive global services for our ballast water treatment systems from Optimarin. Our technicians are specially certified for Optimarin products, quickly available, and ensure that your systems operate efficiently and reliably to meet stringent environmental regulations
Zeppelin Power Systems Solutions for Marine
For more than 20 years, Optimarin has set the standard in the development of commercial ballast water treatment systems. At Zeppelin Power Systems, we integrate these innovative solutions, which, with a combination of automatic backflushing, self-cleaning filters, and powerful UV radiation, effortlessly neutralize all potentially invasive species.
During ballast water uptake, the water is passed through the Optimarin filter, which removes larger organisms and particles, flushing them back overboard. The filtered water then flows through a UV chamber, where organisms, viruses, and bacteria are killed or inactivated. Optimarin uses high-performance UV lamps to ensure top-notch purification results, even under extreme water conditions.
During ballast water discharge, the filter is automatically bypassed, and the water receives a second UV treatment to ensure all regulations are met. The system’s modular design allows for easy installation on any ship, both for new builds and retrofits, even in tight spaces. The system uses and generates no chemicals, making it both safe and environmentally friendly.
The Optimarin Control Panel is powerful and user-friendly. With a high-performance CPU, information can be efficiently managed, monitored, and exchanged. The touch panel enables effortless control, while our cloud-based data acquisition system, OptiLink, provides a centralized and easy-to-understand overview, both on board and remotely.
In addition, we offer comprehensive maintenance and spare parts services to ensure the continuous operation of your systems. The Optimarin system is, of course, fully IMO and USCG certified, guaranteeing the highest safety and quality standards.
Do you have questions about our Optimarin ballast water treatment systems? We are happy to provide you with comprehensive advice.
For easy and quick installation, our Optimarin Skid Solution is an extremely efficient choice for both new builds and retrofit projects. Simply lift it onboard, connect the inlet, outlet, and drain piping, and link electrical cables and air lines when using pneumatic drives, and you're ready for ballast operation.
The smallest model of our Skid Solutions can treat 50 m³/h of ballast water, while the largest model can handle 3,000 m³/h of ballast water.
Our Skid Solutions are also available for use in potentially explosive environments (Optimarin EX Solutions). In the EX version, the control cabinets are located in a safe zone on the ship.
Our BWTS Ex variant from Optimarin is specifically designed for use in explosive areas of Zone 1. It uses individually certified quality components that lead to an Ex certification: II 2G Ex d e ia ib mb px IIB/IIC T4, depending on the selected options. The control and power panels are placed in non-hazardous areas in compliance with safety standards, while UV chambers, valves, filters, pumps, and instruments are approved for installation in hazardous areas.
The Ex protection of the UV chamber is a certified Ex solution. The interior of the UV chambers, except for the ballast water flow path, is purged and pressurized with nitrogen. The nitrogen overpressure prevents contact between the hazardous atmosphere and the UV lamp, ensuring effective UV treatment of the ballast water.
Our experienced consultants are happy to assist you in selecting the right Skid Solution and can provide expert advice on our EX Solutions.

These documents ensure that our systems meet the highest standards and provide environmentally friendly solutions for the protection of marine ecosystems.
Zeppelin Power Systems Industry applications for Marine
Optimarin Ballast Water Treatment Systems are essential in numerous maritime industries. They are used in commercial shipping, the cruise industry, offshore industries, and coastal protection. BWTS help protect the environment, comply with international regulations, and prevent the spread of invasive species.
Over 80% of the goods traded globally are transported by sea, with approximately 3 to 5 billion tons of ballast water being moved internationally each year. Ballast water is essential for the safe and efficient operation of modern shipping, as it provides balance and stability to unmanned vessels. However, it can also pose an ecological, economic, and health threat.
The United Nations considers the introduction of non-native marine species to be one of the four greatest threats to the global environment. At any given time, 35,000 ships are on the waters of the Earth, and more than 3,000 species are transported in their ballast tanks. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) estimates that ten billion tons of ballast water are transported worldwide each year.
In the last ten years, the spread of species to areas where they do not naturally occur has increased significantly. This creates an imbalance in ecosystems and poses a serious environmental threat. Often, the invasive species have no natural predators, causing native species to become extinct and disrupting the entire marine ecosystem. This has dramatic consequences for biodiversity and industries such as fishing and aquaculture.
