Key benefits for your organization

1.

Optimization of Fuel Consumption

Depending on the operating profile, our modifications and upgrades can reduce the engine's fuel consumption by up to 15%. This is achieved through targeted adjustments to the air intake, fine-tuning of engine timing, and optimization for operation with variable speed, for example, to better operate the engine in "Combinator-Mode." These improvements not only reduce fuel consumption but also ensure that engine performance is optimally matched to the specific power requirements, leading to cost savings and more sustainable operation.

2.

Improving the CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator)

To improve the CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) value of your engine, we can perform retrofitting and modifications on many Caterpillar and MaK engines. This can be achieved through the installation of custom retrofit packages, upgrade kits, and the use of alternative fuels.

3.

Compliance with Environmental Regulations and Emission Standards

The maritime industry faces increasingly stringent environmental regulations and emission standards imposed by international and national authorities, such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). To reduce emissions and minimize environmental impact, the modification, retrofitting, and optimization of ship engines are essential.

4.

Safety and Reliability

Modern and retrofitted ship engines significantly contribute to enhanced operational safety. By installing state-of-the-art components and optimizing existing systems, the reliability of the drive is greatly improved. This results in a noticeable reduction in disruptions and failures during daily operations.

Driving Decarbonization: Custom Engine Modifications for Alternative Fuels

A promising way to make existing fleets more environmentally friendly and improve the Carbon Intensity Indicator is through custom engine modifications for alternative fuels. These modifications allow existing engines to be adapted to operate with different fuels.

Driving Decarbonization: Custom Engine Modifications for Alternative Fuels

Away from Diesel: New Fuels for Greater Sustainability

Traditionally, many engines were designed to run on diesel fuel. However, times are changing. More and more companies are looking for more environmentally friendly alternatives. The transition from conventional diesel to alternative fuels plays a key role in promoting sustainability within the maritime industry.

E-Fuels, GTL (Gas-To-Liquid), Biodiesel (FAME), HVO

Synthetic fuels such as e-fuels, GTL, biodiesel (FAME), and HVO provide environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels, enabling the operation of existing combustion engines with reduced CO₂ emissions.

Methanol as a Sustainable Alternative

A special focus is placed on methanol. Caterpillar is actively working on developing engines that can run on methanol. These engines will be available in the coming years. Existing engines can also be retrofitted to burn methanol.

Engine Conversions for Alternative Fuels

The transition to alternative fuels typically requires several modifications to the engine and its components. This includes adjusting the fuel preparation system to accommodate the properties of the new fuel. The injection system must also be precisely controlled to ensure optimal combustion. Additionally, engine parameters such as compression ratio and timing need to be adjusted.

Operational Optimization of the Engine Ensures Lower Consumption and Greater Range

Operational Optimization of the Engine Ensures Lower Consumption and Greater Range

When optimizing engine operation for specific applications, various measures are key, particularly optimizing fuel consumption and emissions, which must be tailored to the specific operating conditions.

Making the Engine More Efficient through Fuel and Partial Load Optimization

To reduce fuel consumption, the engine can be optimized and made more efficient, for example, by using a different turbocharger specification and optimizing engine timing through the use of adapted camshafts.

It is crucial to align fuel consumption with actual operating conditions. Optimizing the engine for full load may result in less optimal fuel consumption at partial load, that is, under lower load conditions. Therefore, partial load optimization is an important approach. It focuses on making engine operation more efficient at low loads and optimizing fuel consumption through targeted adjustments to match the actual operating conditions.

Emissions Optimization

In emissions optimization, the engine is adjusted to meet specific emission values in order to comply with stringent environmental regulations. These optimizations can be implemented individually or in combination with other measures, and aim to minimize pollutant emissions without compromising engine efficiency.

By combining these optimizations, engines can be perfectly adapted to the specific operational requirements, which not only lowers operating costs but also reduces environmental impact.

Zeppelin Power Systems offers these optimizations individually to meet the specific needs of our customers. Feel free to contact us for a consultation!

Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII): The Benchmark for Maritime Emissions

The Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) is a crucial benchmark in the maritime sector, evaluating the carbon intensity of ships. It was introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in shipping.

The CII calculates the annual CO₂ emissions of a ship in relation to the cargo transported and the distance covered, expressed in grams of CO₂ per tonne-mile (gCO₂/tm). Ships must comply with specific CII values to meet regulatory requirements. To achieve this, retrofits, modifications, and operational optimizations can be made to the propulsion systems to improve efficiency and minimize CO₂ emissions.

To improve the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), various measures can be taken:

Increase Energy Efficiency: Optimize energy consumption by using more efficient engines and propulsion systems. Reduce fuel consumption through operational optimization and load point adjustments..

Use Alternative Fuels: Switch to alternative fuels such as e-fuels, biodiesel, methanol, or LNG to reduce CO₂ emissions. These fuels often have a lower carbon content than conventional diesel.

Technological Upgrades: Invest in modern technologies and retrofits such as exhaust aftertreatment systems, improved air intake systems, or efficient turbochargers to further reduce emissions.

Regular Maintenance and Monitoring: Keep your engines and systems regularly maintained and monitored to ensure they are always operating at optimal conditions, minimizing emissions.

Optimize Operational Practices: Adjust the ship's operational practices to improve the CII. This can be done by optimizing speed, route planning, or using performance monitoring software.
