Robust, compact and with an enormous power range: The Cat C13D achieves the highest power density of all diesel engines in the 13-litre segment.
At AGRITECHNICA, the world's leading agricultural machinery exhibition, Zeppelin Power Systems presented the new Cat C13D and announced the European launch of the 13-liter diesel engine. With an enormous power range, it combines the performance of three engines and is more compact, lighter and quieter than its predecessors. Equipped with the latest technology, the Cat C13D is the perfect solution for all applications. Following the launch of the engine in the US in March, AGRITECHNICA is the launch pad for the European engine market. The first pilot engines will be available as early as 2025, with series production starting in 2026.
More power, higher efficiency and lower fuel consumption
The Cat C13D is a new engine that differs from its predecessors on the outside: For the first time, the spur gear housing is located at the rear of the engine rather than at the front. This makes the engine slimmer, more compact and quieter. With an output of 40kW per liter, the Cat C13D is the leader in its class and with a power range of 340-515kW, it combines the power of three engines: the Cat C13B, the Cat C15 and the single turbo version of the Cat C18.
The Cat C13D meets all global emission requirements in the same configuration, allowing it to be used worldwide. Its components, such as oil filter, oil cooler and water pump, are installed in a compact "fluid module". As a result, the engine not only takes up less space, it is also more efficient and has a significantly lower risk of leakage. In addition, oil and filter change intervals can be extended up to 1,000 hours.
Fuel savings of up to 10 percent can be achieved by using the latest common-rail injection technology in combination with a VTG turbocharger and a new software architecture. Like all Cat engines, the Cat C13D is compatible with alternative fuels such as HVO or biodiesel.
Cat C13D platform for the future
Even in times of energy transition, diesel and internal combustion engines will continue to be used in off-highway applications. The new Cat C13D offers new opportunities: Better fuel economy, more power, more torque and a wider range of environmental and altitude characteristics.
"Feedback on the new engine has been very positive so far," says Thomas Pielucha, Sales Manager Industry & Rail Vehicles at Zeppelin Power Systems. "In particular, the ability to consolidate the machine range with a single engine has been well received, as it simplifies service, spare parts procurement and warehousing."
Series production of the Cat C13D is scheduled for 2026. However, there are prototype engines that will be installed in selected customers' machines as early as next year. The first pilot engines will also be available for order from 2025.
"With the Cat C13D, we are helping to reduce emissions and fuel consumption while offering our customers a more efficient and powerful solution. The Cat C13D will be adapted to future requirements and emission guidelines and is clearly the basis for new technologies in the future," says Jonny Al-Saiegh, Technical Director Industry at Zeppelin Power Systems.
The Cat Battery Pack will also be on display at the Zeppelin Power Systems booth. The modular system, which is still in the development phase, is expected to make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation and electrification of industry in combination with electric motors.
